Saturday rolled around quickly, and she ran herself ragged taking extra-early shifts for Ann at Sully’s so she’d cover Ali’s undesirable one. She’d also convinced Ann to cover for her Sunday morning, in case Saturday turned out to be a really late night. The more time she spent away from Jake, the more she warmed to the idea of him. JJ—she couldn’t think of him as Joe Bob—was a fantasy, and Jake was as close to a flesh-and-blood prince as she would ever come. She’d never owned any but the most basic wardrobe items to fit her needs, and for the first time, she had beautiful things.

That week Ali and Becca crossed paths only once. Becca flitted in and out as if she’d sprouted wings. This was the first time Ali had seen her friend in love. Becca had been secretly disdainful of most of the men she’d dated while rooming with Ali, so much so that it wasn’t clear why she bothered. Watching Becca then had made Ali even more reluctant to date. Besides, she’d had her hands full with her course work and barista job, and later on, catering gigs.

Ali tried not to be ashamed of her sturdy wool coat as Jake escorted her to the limo. Had he given it a dismayed second glance? Perhaps not.

They were headed for the Chief Joseph Club on Fourth Avenue, one of the oldest private clubs in Seattle, founded in 1903. It was a venerable brick fortress—nothing else like it outside of Pioneer Square—known as the preferred club of conservative businessmen and women. Most rich men were fiscally conservative, she guessed. Jake was against poaching; she knew that much. Did he approve of trophy hunting if no laws were broken? She hoped not.

“Have you ever been to the Chief Joseph Club?” he asked her.

“Uh, no. I rarely get out of North Bend.”

He laughed, so she grinned as if she’d been joking. Now that she lived in North Bend, Ali had seen her world shrink to the square mile that included her home, Sully’s, the video rental place, and the grocery store.

“Do you like movies?” Ali was following her own train of thought, so to Jake the question must have seemed out of the blue.

“Yes, of course. All kinds. Classic films, blockbusters.”

“Westerns?”

“Sure.”

“Clint Eastwood or John Wayne?” Ali wasn’t sure where she was going with this. She had started with their gay friend Pete the waiter’s litmus test, which had everything to do with whether he was attracted to the leading man. So far Jake had been vague when it came to his cultural preferences. She and JJ hadn’t discussed movies, just music. Ali wondered if work wasn’t pretty much Jake’s life, aside from staying fit, eating out, and drinking expensive wine. He might just be pretending to have outside interests. By “outside,” Ali meant the classic arts—classical music, foreign films, theater. She wasn’t a culture snob. She liked both John Wayne and Clint Eastwood. Arnold Schwarzenegger, even though he was more action star than actor.
